Scratching a board

January 10, 2017: Lyra is learning how to scratch her nails on sandpaper. I’ve pasted strips of 60 grit sandpaper onto a board, and am trying to “shape”: i.e., wait until Lyra scratches the board, then click and treat. I’ll work on her front paws for now (most in dire need) and figure out how to put a back paw scratch on cue at some stage!

The goal is twofold: to wear her claws down enough to forego a trip to the vet — until I’ve had more time to work on that area — and to get her used to the sensation of grinding. (Maybe one day a dremel?) An added bonus would be if she learnt only to paw on cue 🙂 But I don’t want to seem greedy.

I took a video of our first session with the board tonight.
